Evaluation: Defile coursework

The genre we have chosen is a horror based theme. I researched the different types of genre and what conventions are needed to present a successful introduction for a horror movie. I decided to use 2 locations, a bedroom representing an evacuation hospital facility, (due to the main hospital being overrun due to amount of casualties) and the woods representing a desolate, daunting area (where the main character finds himself running away from something.)I decided not to follow the conventions from the horror films we reviewed as we wanted to add our own ideas for our horror introduction, we decided this because we felt it would make our film different to other horror films therefore making people want to watch it as it would be engaging and the audience could relate more to the settings.
In the introduction the social group represented is a young generation, specifically teenagers. I used our coding schedule to gather information about what types of social groups would most likely watch a horror movie, I gave 10 different people who were not necessarily our target audience my questionnaire to fill in about horror films; from these results we based our introduction according to the theme of a younger generation preferring horror movies. The main character is in the late teens and is male. He is representing a young independent man coming from a basic background (lives with parents, has a girlfriend, and is middle class.) I decided to use this social class because the audience can relate to the position of the man, as we used their comments to decide what social background and group they would prefer the characters to represent.
Questionnaire below:

I personally think my film will be an independent film; however I believe it will still have the potential to grow and become a well-known film. I think this because it meets the target audience and meets the expectations of what the audience would expect from a horror film, as we have based our film introduction on what people who like horror movies prefer to see, therefore it is attracting a certain audience and meeting their expectations. I have thought about online distribution for my film because I feel that the internet is used by a vast majority and distributing my film through the internet will broaden the amount of people who will see it, therefore reaching a wider, vaster audience. Also omline distribution through sites like Youtube can be free therefore it is cheaper to distribute online, also youtube is used by a wide anudience therefore it can be viewed easily making it more popular. With online distribution you can also personalise your own site therefore you can add your own perspective onto the site. However, online distribution like a personalised site is only good if people know where to look or actually know about the site.

A zombie film called 'Another Earth' by Eitan Reuven is set to be distributed online this year; it is similar to our film as it all starts from a contamination or a program that goes wrong and turns everyone into flesh eating zombies. This uses online distribution to distribute this film to a wider audience that are interested in zombie films.

Above are a few clips that answer the following questions:
Q4 - Who would be the target audience for your film?Q5 - How did your film address your audience?Q6 - What have you learned about technology from the process of constructing your product?
Q7 -
Looking back at your prelimary task, what do you feel you have learned in the process from it to be the full product?

Q5 - How does your film address your audience?
We addressed our audience in the film through the use of different camera shots. We extensively used first person (point of view shot) throughout most of the film, an example is when the character is looking at his hands. The use of first person here enables the audience to feel they are the character in the scene, allowing them to relate to the situation making them feel involved; this causes the audience to feel tention when neccesary as they are expirencing the film in first person.
We also use shot reverse shot which although it is not a direct address towards the audience it still engages them as they want to 'follow' the charcter as he walks through the door; to find out where he is going. However, because it is a film the audience cannot physically follow the character, therefore by using shot reverse shot it keeps the audince engaged and makes them want to keep watching our film to find out where the character went.

We decided to use shot reverse shot and first person as it is a commonly used camera shot in other horror movies. This is because they easily engage the audience which keeps their attention on the film; making them want to watch on to see what is going to happen next.
Q7 - Looking back at your priliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the proggesion from it to the full product?
The priliminary task that we did before making the film enabled us to try different camera shots and angles, this broadened our knowledge of the media shots that would be best for us to use for the genre of our film. (horror) We mainly used shot types that would be best suited for our horror film, these shots consisted of Shot reverse shot and 1st person. We used the priliminary task to help us decide which shots would be best for our film, we decided that 1st person was a shot type that was used a lot in other horror films which would be a good shot to use in ours, therefore we used the priliminary task to try out 1st person and shot reverse shot to see what effect this would have on the target audience. These shots were very effective as they engage the audience allowing them to feel they are in the scene. The priliminary task enabled me personally to get an insight on what shot types are best for the selected genre of film, as the shot type decides how the audience engage with the film.

Introduction to storyboards (Changes & What storyboard is used for.)

The storyboard gives the reader an insight to what is going to happen in the introduction to Defile. The first storyboard we made was not ideal for the length of the clip as it lasted less than a minute whereas the clip is suppose to last upto 2 minutes. Therefore we had to make a new storyboard which would last a duration of about 1min 30-40 seconds. This enabled us to add the titles needed wihout it going over the 2 minutes or being significantly under. The storyboard relates to our coursework as it gives us an idea of what camera shots we need to put into the introduction and what main features will be needed in order for the introduction to make sense to the viewers. We have used the storyboard as a guideline for the main clips in the introduction; we have put these clips in our introduction whilst adding a few other clips in order for the film introduction to make sense and look more dramatic.

New Storyboard: Defile

1. In this scene, there is an arial shot of a man layed asleep in bed along with  a master shot of the room. The camera zooms in on the man's face closing onto his eye. The sounds and dialogue used in this shot is a heartbeat sound which gets louder as the clip zooms in. There is also the sound of a thunderstorm in the background which begins to fade in.

2. In this scene, the camera zooms in on the man's eye as it opens. The sounds and dialogue used are a heartbeat sound which stops as the man opens his eye, adding effect to the shot. There is also the sounds of a thunder storm still in the background.

3. In this scene, there is a shot of the man climbing out of bed. This uses a head on shot as the camera is focused on the man. The sounds and dialogue used are rain/ thunder in the backround. This begins to fade out slowly.

4. In this scene, there is a forward view of the man sat on the bed with his hands on his head. The sound and dialogue used are the sound of the thunerstorm in the background which is still fading out. This creates effect as it creates a mysterious atmosphere.

5. In this scene, there is a forward view of the man standing up and looking at his hands, this turns into a point of view shot as the camera looks at the man's hands as if it is from his point of view therefore making the audince feel they have a connection with the man. The sounds and dialogue in this shot is the Rain and thunder, this is fasing out and is hardly heard.

6. In this scene, there is a master shot which turns into a zoom onto the clock. This also uses a point of view shot as the shot is from the man's point of view. the sounds and dialogue used in this shot is the rain and thunder which dies away to the end of this scene.

7. In this scene, there is a pan following thr man as he walks out of the door. This also uses match on action. This scene eventually fades out into a black screen. The shot has no sounds, it is silent adding the effect of tension.

8. In this scene, there is match on action from a point of view shot as you see the man running and turinin back to see zombies running after him, this scene swaps from a black screen to the man running to end with a black screen. This happens three times. There is the sounds of heaving breathing from the man running.
